Responsibility & Activism
Always Learning
As a person who has the privilege of working with other people, often during their vulnerable times or with intimate aspects of their lives such as their physical and mental health, body confidence and self esteem, it’s aboslutely my responsibilty to be committed to continually being on a quest to learn more about what inequalities exist, how I am complicit and where I can deepen my understanding.
This is not a personal journey of self improvement, it’s a recognition of the personal and systemic privileges I have and how these impact the people and places I interact with.
Our actions have widespread effects. Whatever our intentions are, sometimes the outcome is different than we imagined and often, if we are all brutally honest with ourselves, we choose to act and live in a way that benefits us, that brings us more convenience, even at the cost of others.
I want to do better. I hope we all want to do better.
If you think there is an area that you think I can do better with, please do reach out. I’m listening.
MY ETHOS AND APPROACH
Everyone will feel welcome and be accomodated for
Nobody will ever feel left behind, it’s my job to find the right approach for every person
Yoga, fitness, meditation and anything body related will never be neutral. We will consider how current and past global events touch all of us (e.g. genocide and war, police brutality, authoritarianism, wealth disparity, climate destruction, white supremacy)
The modern fitness and yoga communities need to work more on anti-racism, colourism and cultural appropriation. Collectively we will do the work
The modern fitness and yoga communities need to work more on fatphobia, classism, ableism and sexism, Collectively we will do the work
I hold a safe and inclusive space for the LGBTQIA+ community, of which I am a member, as well as respecting pronouns and removing gender assumptions and stereotypes
There is no such thing as perfect posture or a correct way to do one exercise for all people, simply many options, none superior, all will be explored
I actively discourage any teacher, coach or mentor being placed on a pedestal, including myself. We learn as a collective, all equally ready to listen and contribute
Every alignment cue for every movement will have a fully explained anatomical or psychological reasoning so you can decide if it is right for you
Bullying, gaslighting, aggressive defensiveness, cancel culture, spiritual bypassing and toxic positivity will be addressed and unpacked
Every approach, tradition and philosophy will be respected and discussed
It is the job of the teacher, coach and mentor to serve the student
Creativity, integrity, adaptability and acceptance are my key tenets
